Our Nation Has Six Senators, The Military Industrial Media Complex Has 93
My edit of David Swanson's post at AfterDowningStreet.org (linked here and above):
On our side: Feingold, Harkin, Boxer, Kennedy, Kerry, and Byrd.
On their side: Hillary Clinton, Barak Obama, Carl Levin, Debbie Stabenow and the other 89.
"Congress plunged into divisive election-year debate on the Iraq war Thursday as the U.S. military death toll reached 2,500. The Senate soundly rejected a call to withdraw combat troops by year's end, and House Republicans laid the groundwork for their own vote. In a move Democrats criticized as gamesmanship, Senate Republicans brought up the withdrawal measure and quickly dispatched it - for now - on a 93-6 vote."
In the House of Representatives, 42 Democrats joined 214 Republicans in voting 256-153 to continue the war as "a central front in the war on terror". "Three Republicans were among the 153 members who voted against it. Nineteen lawmakers did not vote, and five voted present to protest Republican restrictions on the debate. The House has two vacancies."
The Democratic Party's refusal to denounce this war will be their downfall in November. The latest polls show that a majority of Americans (53% according to CNN) want to set a timeline for withdrawl. The Senate ignores the American people, listening only to their corporate constituents who want to continue reaping the profits of the war. Some members of the House seem to be finally listening to the people.
Those Representatives and Senators who continue to support this illegal war should be tarred, feathered, and run out of Washington in shame come November.
